Jargon Buster

We realise that health and energy saving has a lot of jargon, so we thought we would put together a jargon buster to keep you up to date.

  • Benefit Entitlement Check – A check run by Welfare Rights to assess which benefits a client is entitled to, and whether there are any further benefits that they could claim.
  • CDDFT – County Durham and Darlington Foundation Trust.
  • CDHHP – County Durham Healthy Homes Parternship.
  • CDPAP - County Durham Partnership Against Poverty.
  • CHS - Central Heating System.
  • CMD – Common Mental Disorders. There are links between CMD and fuel poverty.
  • CMHT - Community Mental Health Team.
  • COPD - Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
  • CVD - Cardiovascular Disease.
  • Decent Home – A home that meets the minimum standard for housing. It should be wind and weather tight, warm, and have modern facilities.
  • DOH – Department of Health.
  • ECI - Environmental Change Institute.
  • EPC – Energy Performance Certificate.
  • ESCOs – Energy Saving Companies.
  • EST – Energy Saving Trust. UK’s leading impartial organisation helping people to save energy and reduce carbon emissions.
  • EWDs – Excess Winter Deaths. Deaths that occur as a result of the winter monehts. Measured by the increase of winter deaths over non winter deaths. Also known as EWM (Excess Winter Mortality).
  • Fuel Poverty – People living in fuel poverty are those spending more than 10% of the household income on heating their homes.
  • HEC – Home Energy Check.
  • HHSRS - Housing Health and Safety Rating System. Used to assess housing conditions.
  • ICO – Integrated Care Organisation. The ICO brings together input, delivery, managment and organisation of services around diagnosis, treatment, care, rehabilitation and health promotion.
  • IDAOPI – Income Deprivation Affecting Older People Index. Used for measuring income deprivation affecting older people.
  • Keep Warm Keep Well - Booklets and posters advising about keeping warm and healthy.
  • LTCs – Long Term Conditions.
  • NEA – National Energy Action.
  • NEPHO – North east Public Health observatory. The regional health intelligence organisation, providing information and analysis to improveĀ  health and reduce inequalities.
  • NHS CHS – NHS Community Health Services.
  • Off-Gas Properties – Properties with energy supplied using electric, oil, LPG or solid fuels (e.g. wood). There are often rural properties.
  • On-Gas Properties – Properties with energy supplied by natural gas from main gas pipelines for domestic use. These are often more urban properties.
  • OP - Older People.
  • PBOA – Partnership Board for Older Adults.
  • PCT - Orimary care Trust.
  • PVD – Peripheral Vascular Disease.
  • TADEA – A leading energy advice company in the north-east of England.
  • Vulnerable Adult – An adult who needs assistance to conduct his or her own affairs, or somebody receiving health and social care.
  • WarmFront – A givernment grant scheme to make homes warmer and healthier.
  • WHO – World Health Organisation.
  • Winter Planning – NHS Preparations for the winter months. This will include schemes such as the flu jab for elderly and vulnerable people.
